Celebrating Palliative Care week: The South East Technological University presents a collaborative showcase of research and impactful activities focussed on the person, helping them to Live as well as possible, South East Technological University, 10am-1pm
The department of Nursing & Healthcare along with the Walton Institute are delighted to facilitate our 2nd event for the annual Palliative Care Week ‘Palliative Care: Living as well as possible’. This is a wonderful opportunity to showcase the research and impactful activities ongoing in a collaborative manner by both departments as they contribute in a meaningful way towards the greater goal of actively improving the quality of life of a person with a life-limiting illness. To date the department of nursing have successfully received HRB funding, enabling a dedicated student led undergraduate nursing research initiative in the area of undergraduate palliative care nursing education. Educational technological resources were developed as part of this initiative, with the objective of supporting undergraduate nursing level training. This valuable educational resource formed the basis of an exciting and focused collaboration between Walton institute and Department of Nursing and Healthcare in SETU transferring the knowledge gained to be used as patient centric requirements towards the creation of an initial dedicated palliative care and educational virtual reality training experience.
Furthermore, the completion of an educational fellowship with the AIIHPC by a member of the department of Nursing and healthcare has resulted in a publicly available online resource for palliative care education on the AIIHPC website. Novel innovations utilising new and emerging technologies in the e-textiles and mixed reality domain are actively being investigated and developed to maximise the potential impact such technologies can have for palliative care. This fruitful collaboration in SETU enables a multidisciplinary driven team approach, driving real impactful outputs providing practical supports to enable the person to maintain or regain a good level of independence.

Creating space, clarity, and containment to manage the emotional impact of working in palliative care, Wednesday 14 September 2022 3 – 4pm Webinar
Barbara Wren and All Ireland Institute of Hospice and Palliative Care are delighted to invite you to a webinar: Creating space, clarity, and containment to manage the emotional impact of working in palliative care. This webinar will be of particular interest to professionals working in palliative care in the island of Ireland. It will take place on Wednesday 14 September at 3pm.
The emotional challenges of working in palliative care are predictable and can be managed. This webinar will describe and consider these challenges and highlight the importance of attending to the impact of both the content and the contexts of palliative care work to help practitioners and teams to stay well, and on task. It will cover the basics (role clarity, good work design, effective multi-disciplinary teamwork, and good management), and go on to describe a range of psychological interventions that protect staff health by allowing for the regular release of deeper emotions that may be evoked by the work but need to be managed to provide high quality palliative care.
Barbara Wren is a Consultant Psychologist and her company Wren Psychology Associates develops and delivers psychological interventions for healthcare organisations in the UK and Ireland. Barbara has a keen interest in using narrative to develop individual, role and system resilience as described in her book “True Tales of Organisational Life” (Karnac 2016) which explores the containment that needs to be available to enable healthcare staff to manage the impact of their work, while staying effective in role. She further deepened this work while developing a variety of interventions for a range of NHS organisations to support healthcare staff and systems to manage the impact of the Covid pandemic. She has worked with palliative care staff for 20 years providing individual and group psychological interventions and has described this work in a chapter written for the forthcoming Handbook of Palliative Care to be published in 2022 by Wiley Press.
The webinar will last for 60-minutes and will include a presentation from Barbara Wren (Consultant Psychologist, C. Psychol., CSci., AFBPsS., FFOM (RCPI) and space for questions and reflection.
